Already adopted as the next darling of the press, M.I.A.’s debut album is assured a large territory in the musical landscape of 2005. It started with the COVER of the Fader this fall , a review of a UK single in the New York Times, and more recently a two page New Yorker feature. Album features have already been secured in SPIN, URB, New Yorker, Blackbook, Nylon, Paper, XLR8R, Rockpile, Flaunt, SOMA, Wired, and too many others to mention. Through an amazingly organic word of mouth about her debut single Galang , #1 iTunes Dance single, M.I.A. has already become a household name to the hip glitterati of the world.
Aged just 11, M.I.A. (aka Maya Arul) became a refugee of war. Like many others, her family were forced to flee Sri Lanka when the Sinhala-Tamil conflict began to grip the country in the mid-eighties. Quickly adapting to her new suroundings, she has gone from those dark days to where she is today, on the verge of stardom. |
