From the plain-spoken chorus of Trace’s Windfall to the forlorn pedal steel of Straightaways’ Left A Slide and the gritty guitars of Wide Swing Tremolo’s Straightface, Son Volt has always pushed the boundaries to blend traditional American music forms with poetic imagery and straight-ahead rock. Central to defining the Son Volt sound is songwriter Jay Farrar.
Returning to the studio in the fall of 2004, Farrar enlisted guitarist Brad Rice (Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams), bassist Andrew Duplantis (Jon Dee Graham, Meat Puppets, Bob Mould) and drummer Dave Bryson (Canyon) to record a new Son Volt album which will be released in summer 2005. On April 19, New West Records will release Son Volt’s Austin City Limits performance on DVD. On May 24, Rhino Records will release a Son Volt anthology, including demos, b-sides and rarities. Son Volt’s 2005 SXSW performance marks a return after nine years. |
