The Austin Theremonic Orchestra is comprised of 6 theremin players (from left to right): Aileen Adler, Anne Heller, Douglas Ferguson, Lori Surfer, Heather Brand, and Steve Marsh (not pictured). The group was assembled by Douglas Ferguson in October 2004 for a performance at the Bob Bullock museum in Austin, TX. This debut performance was met with great critical acclaim and the group was contacted by the Austin Film Society to accompany their screening of the theremin documentary 'electronic odessy'. The orchestra was ecstatic to recieve a standing ovation to a sold-out show! They are currently recording and album and hope to have it ready before soon. They are also rehearsing for their third performance which will be part of sxsw. Their showcase will be on Thursday March 17th 8:00PM at the hideout. Their sxsw artist page can be viewed at "http://2005.sxsw.com/music/showcases/band/17417.html".
The orchestra's music consists of free improvizations on the theremin. This improvization are woven through a losely defined framework based on the conversations before each performance. Theremonic pieces will typically take you from the soothing melodic pure tones of the theremin to the howling banshee of phychedelic freak-out. The lush tones that envelope the sonics help to float you from one sonic passage to the other. Stay tuned for the forthing coming debut album. http://www.distilleryrecords.com |
