The High Dials

There's hippie music (Grateful Dead, Phish, Medeski Martin and Wood), and then there are bands that make music born from the marijuana without all that tie-dyed crap. Sonically, the High Dials make no disguise of their penchant for psychedelic mind expansions, but their music is so full of California pop sunshine that you can forgive them for their extremely fleeting Dead-like flourishes. There's so much good stuff in their songs that the influences melt together in a bright swirl of harmonies-- elements of the Byrds, the Beatles, and the Kinks soar together to form a bellbottomed relative of the Beta Band's best moments. Add in some fresh organ grooves, and this Montreal act is so good it's hard to imagine it'll stay indie and underground for too long.
